Arthritis is caused by joint inflammation, which worsens over time if left untreated. Though we tend to see this disease in older pets the most, younger pets can also be diagnosed with it. Since there’s no cure, your pet’s best bet for living with the disease is to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that supports pain management.

What causes it?

A range of factors can lead to your pet developing arthritis. Some cat breeds like Siamese and Persians and dogs like German Shepard and Retrievers are more susceptible to hip dysplasia caused by their genetics. Joint injuries like fractures can also manifest as arthritis over time. If your pet is obese, the additional weight can also create added pressure on the joints. If you notice your furry friend limping, reluctance to move, change in their behaviour, irritability and tiredness, please contact us at 403-253-7044. We can support your pet with a diagnosis.

Which parts of the body does arthritis affect?

Arthritis mainly affects joints where the protective cushion has gradually worn away. Areas of your pet’s body prone to arthritis include:

  • Legs
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Spine

What treatments are available?

Based on your pet’s symptoms, we’ll create a treatment plan that helps manage their pain and inflammation. In addition to non-inflammatory medications, we’ll recommend exercise and dietary adjustments to improve their range of motion and relieve pain. Our veterinary team also offers therapeutic treatments like acupuncture and chiropractic medicine to support your pet’s wellbeing.
