Our Services

Our clinic is a full service practice offering all the conventional amenities. We are a little different in that we also offer alternative medicine. We like to use an integrative approach to your pet’s health. We recommend Chinese herbs, chiropractic, or acupuncture integrated with western medicine. Browse through the links below to learn more about our services.

Spay or Neuter

Spaying or neutering your pet is an important step in ensuring the best quality of life for them. Click here for more information about why and when to take this step.

Wellness Exams

What is the key to a pet’s long healthy life? Wellness exams! Consider that our pets cannot tell us if they are ill or are in any discomfort or pain. A yearly wellness exam includes a thorough physical examination, vaccine titers or boosters and diagnostic testing when needed. Testing enables us to detect many issues that are dismissed as “aging” but are actually signs of illness that could be treated.

New Patients

We always welcome new patients and we would be happy to give you a tour, please phone for a convenient time.

Internal Medicine

If your pet becomes ill our veterinarians will walk you through the whole process, from diagnosis to treatment and follow up. We will take the time to explain any testing that is needed and discuss the results with you. But it does not end there, we want to make sure your pet has recovered fully, so expect a follow up call from us!

Nutritional Counselling

Nowadays our pets are living longer and healthier lives thanks to advances in preventive care and nutrition. We will offer you the best nutritional advice to meet your pet’s requirements based on life stages and individual needs.

Surgery

A wide variety of soft tissue surgeries (ranging from elective surgeries such as spays, to emergency procedures) are performed here at BKVC. For advanced procedures we can refer to one of the specialist surgical centers in town.

Anesthetic

Every precaution is taken to ensure a safe, non eventful anesthetic for your pet. We monitor ECG, Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate, Blood Pressure, O2, and CO2 Levels in the blood. Body temperature is kept constant by use of circulating warm water pads or a “Bear Hugger” that blows warm air. These devices alert us to any problems and allow us to react immediately preventing any serious issues from occurring.

Laser Surgery

Soft tissue laser surgery provides a different approach to standard surgery. While surgical blades cut tissue, laser “vaporizes” tissue, effectively sealing blood vessels, nerve endings and lymphatics. This results in less bleeding, bruising and pain. It also reduces the risk of infections and allows quicker recovery times.

Lab Services

We have a full service lab at the clinic allowing us to have same day results, usually within 2 hours. This means we can diagnose and treat your pet faster, often while you wait. If more in depth testing is required, we send samples to an outside veterinary lab. We have access to a veterinary pathologist to consult on any cases that require it.

Dental Cleaning

Dental disease is one of the most common conditions found in middle aged to older pets. At Britannia we take dental care very seriously. Our veterinarians and staff will offer the best advice regarding your pet’s oral health. We perform complete dental procedures including cleanings, x-rays and extractions when required. We will discuss the best home dental care plan according to your pet’s needs. We also stock a variety of home dental care products.

Digital Radiology

We have a digital x-ray machine that enables us to take high quality radiographs. We can then email the x-rays to specialists, surgeons or other veterinary clinics when needed. Our digital dental x-ray machine is a key tool to assess the health of your pet’s teeth. It allows us to visualize any problems with the tooth such as a broken root. For specialized procedures such as root canals we offer a referral service.

Pharmacy

We have an extensive pharmacy that includes commonly prescribed medications, herbs, homeopathic medicine and nutraceuticals. Also, we carry or can order flavoured compounded medications for specific patient’s needs.

Herbal Medicine

Herbs can be used as an alternative or in conjunction with western drugs and are used to treat deep seated conditions, but can also be beneficial in addressing immediate concerns such as itchiness.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting tiny needles into specific spots on the body (acupuncture points) to treat a wide variety of conditions. Acupuncture is a very holistic approach to medicine. The whole animal, its history, the pulse and tongue condition and the behavioural characteristics of the animal are all considered in the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is the practice of manipulating the joint and spine to preserve proper alignment and function. When you consider the life of our animal companions jumping in and out of cars, playing roughly etc, it is important to keep their spines aligned. A misaligned spine can have far reaching consequences such as behaviour changes or GI upsets. Adjustments are quick and usually painless and animals feel better immediately.

Boarding (Cats & Exotics)

If your feline companion needs a place to stay while you are away, we offer a boarding room that has been designed to provide comfort and an enriched environment for your cat. We also board a variety of exotic animals from reptiles and rabbits to pocket pets and birds.

Wildlife

We accept injured or orphaned wildlife from the public. We will triage and treat them and if appropriate, transfer them to the rehabilitation centers. Before attempting to rescue a potentially injured or orphaned wild animal, it is important to be sure that the animal actually needs help. Watch it from a distance so as not to frighten it or keep the parents from returning. Check the animal periodically for 24 to 36 hours to see if it is still around. DO NOT touch or remove the animal unless you are absolutely certain that it is orphaned or in immediate danger. With some species, it is normal for parents to leave their offspring alone for extended periods of time. A young animal that looks well-fed with bright eyes and clean fur or feathers is probably not orphaned.

In our retail area you will find a selection of over the counter products and treats. If there is something you would like to have that we don’t carry, we have a catalog full of great products that can be specially ordered in for you.
